The day in which we live in is one of information overload. Within seconds a person can access reliable or unreliable information on any subject they so desire. This age we live in has come around rather quickly. Some of you know nothing else but this information age. However, my generation remembers the days when the internet could have meant some tool aiding in the process of catching fish. LOL Sorry, that was bad! The day when there wasn't a record of the historical account of Jesus must have been a scary and amazing time. Information traveled in a much different way compared to today.
Have you ever just kind of glossed over the first few sentences of a book of the Bible because they all seem to say the same thing? Well, you can't do that with Luke. If you do, you miss more than the normal greeting.
Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. From this passage we can learn that "many" people in the first century were writing or speaking about the exciting times of Jesus. There were only four accounts accepted because they were the only ones deemed as Scripture. Only four were inspired by God. All the others contained error or bias. Luke understood how important the things that were taught and written about Jesus were. He recognized that information needed to come from people in "the know." Or, from the people that saw what Jesus did and said. And from the places that Jesus went and from the people that He impacted. Luke was certainly in "the know." He wasn't an eyewitness but he was close to people that were. He traveled and wrote for Paul on missionary journeys. If Luke wrote his account in about the year 60, his life would have intertwined extensively with many eyewitness of Jesus' life.
Even after Luke completed both Luke and Acts, progress in the copying and distribution of Scripture would have been extremely slow compared to today's spread of information. It is great to know that we do have the completed work of God in the Bible today. Not only that, but it can be spread to the corners of the earth in seconds. It can touch the lives of nearly every human being on the planet through various means. While today's generation is in a state of information overload, it can be a positive thing.
Thank God today that we have the completed, reliable, inspired, and infallible account of Jesus' life. Thank Him that in an age of information we can impact people all over the world with the gospel through many different means of communication. Ask God to make us more aware of the new ways to impact people around the world as the world of information changes.
